* By OSHA definition, 29 CFR 1910.1200 (See Section
3 for Hazard Identification and Section 8 for
Exposure Guidelines)
3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: Irritant. Harmful if swallowed.
Routes of Exposure: Contact, ingestion. Target
Organ Effects: Eyes: Dust, mist and solutions may irritate or burn.
Skin: Dust, mist and solutions will irritate. Ingestion: May irritate
gastrointestinal tract. May cause severe allergic reactions in some
asthmatics and sulfite sensitive individuals. Large doses may cause
violent colic and diarrhea, circulatory disturbances, central nervous
system disturbances and even death. Inhalation: May irritate nose,
throat and chest. Carcinogenicity: Not a carcinogen
4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes: Flush with clean cool water for 15 minutes holding
eyelids open. Get medical attention. Skin: Promptly wash skin with
plenty of soap and water. Ingestion: Drink plenty of water or milk.
Induce vomiting. See a physician immediately. Inhalation: Remove
to fresh air. If symptoms persist see a physician
5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Flammable Properties: Not flammable. Hazardous Combustion
Products: Not applicable. General Hazards: On exposure to extreme
heat can decompose to give toxic and corrosive sulfur dioxide gas
and a hazardous residue. Extinguishing Media: Appropriate to primary
fire source. Fire Fighting Instructions: Normal firefighting procedures
apply. Self contained breathing apparatus should be worn. Use water
spray to keep containers cool and knock down fumes. Other Information:
Flash Points: Not Applicable, Autoignition Temperature: Not Applicable,
Flammability Limits in Air (% by volume): Not Applicable.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE (SPILL
MEASURES)
Confine large spills. Do not flush with water. Collect
spilled material into an appropriate container. Residue may be cleaned
up with water but rinse water may require collection and careful
neutralization with acid. Neutralization with acid requires good
ventilation since sulfur dioxide gas will be released. May require
oxidation to sodium sulfate with dilute hydrogen peroxide. Spray
residue of small spills with plenty of water.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling: Avoid contact with eyes skin and clothing.
Avoid breathing mist. Use with adequate ventilation. Storage: When
not in use keep container closed. Store in a cool dry location.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL
PROTECTION
Engineering Controls: Good general ventilation. Eye
Protection: Chemical goggles. Skin Protection: Neoprene or natural
rubber gloves, Respiratory Protection: Use only NIOSH/MSHA approved
respiratory protection for mists or sulfur dioxide gas if these
might be generated. Other Protective Equipment: As required to minimize
skin contact. Eye wash, safety shower, Exposure Guidelines: None
established.
9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES (Typical)
Softening Point: Not applicable. Appearance and Odor:
Near black amorphous solid, characteristic odor. Bulk Density: Approx.
12 lbs/gal. Solubility in H20: 20 - 25% at ambient temperatures.
pH (1% solution): approx. 10
10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
Chemical Stability: Stable, Conditions to Avoid: Contact
with strong acids (releases sulfur dioxide), oxidizers (causes vigorous
exothermic reaction). Hazardous Decomposition Products: At very
high temperatures releases toxic and corrosive sulfur dioxide gas
and a flammable, strongly irritating residue. Hazardous Polymerization:
Will not occur.
11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Toxicology of this product has not been established
12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

hr. TLm (Mosquito fish) 2600 ppm
Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD): 0.12 lb/lb instantaneous
13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
Dispose of in an approved waste container. Disposer
must comply with local state and federal regulations with respect
to disposal or discharge.
